Avril Lavigne nació en Belleville y después se mudó a Napanee a los cinco años, ambos pueblos situados al este de la provincia de Ontario, Canadá. Hija de padres devotos cristianos;John Lavigne, de origen francés, y Judy Lavigne, de origen franco-canadiense. Tiene una hermana menor, Michelle y un hermano mayor, Matt. Desde pequeña mostró aptitudes para ser cantante, cuando comenzó a cantar acompañada del piano con su madre una canción religiosa y a los 5 años comenzó a cantar gospel en el coro de la iglesia.

En el año 1998, Avril ganó un concurso para cantar con la cantante canadiense Shania Twain en un concierto en Ottawa, en el que cantaron a dúo What Made you say that?.

Avril Lavigne y Deryck Whibley dieron a conocer su noviazgo en febrero de 2004. Finalmente se comprometieron el 27 de junio de 2005. El 15 de julio del 2006, un año después de haberse comprometido, Avril y Deryck contrajeron matrimonio mediante el rito católico a las cinco de la tarde, en una finca privada en Montecito (California) a unos kilómetros de Los Ángeles.

El género musical al que pertenece la música de Avril Lavigne generalmente está considerado dentro del género rock, pero también pop-punk. Igualmente ella afirma en su MySpace ser de género "Pop/Punk/Rock".también famosas páginas al calificar a un artista en género tales como Allmusic (AMG) le han catalogado su música como "Alternative Pop/Rock, Pop/Rock, Punk-Pop, Post-Grunge". Estos géneros varían de acuerdo a cada álbum que ha sacado , en cada disco que ha sacado mantiene un estilo diferente.

Evolución de su carrera musical

En primer lugar fue descubierta por el mánager Cliff Fabri, mientras cantaba música country en una librería en Kingstone, Ontario.Un tiempo después el cantante folk Steve Medd la invitó a cantar con él la canción Touch The Sky, y dos temas más llamados Temple of Life y Two Rivers en el año 2000.

Cuando Avril tenía 16 años, firmó contrato con Ken Krongard, de artists-and-repertoire (A&R) representantes de Arista Records, quien invitó al director de Arista, Antonio "L.A." Reid, a escucharla cantar en el estudio de Nueva York del productor Peter Zizzo.

Hizo un contrato discográfico con Arista Records, con la ayuda del compositor Clif Magness y con The Matrix en el timón empezó la grabación de Let Go.

Empezó a trabajar en su primer proyecto, (Let Go) a los 16 años, insistiendo en hacerlo sola, y con 17 su primer álbum salió a la venta en Estados Unidos, el 4 de junio de 2002. Del éste se extrajeron como sencillos Complicated, Sk8er Boi, I'm With You y Losing Grip. Su primer álbum ha vendido hasta la fecha más de 16 millones de copias.

Su segundo álbum de estudio se tituló Under My Skin, salió a la venta en Estados Unidos el 25 de mayo de 2004, y contó con la producción de numerosos compositores, artistas y productores entre los que se encontraban Chantal Kreviazuk, Ben Moody (ex-guitarrista de Evanescence y ex novio de Amy Lee), Butch Walker y Evan Taubenfeld, coescribendo con él varios temas del álbum. De ese disco se extrajeron los singles Don't Tell Me, My Happy Ending, Nobody's Home, He Wasn't y solo en Estados Unidos, Fall To Pieces. Gracias a Under My Skin ganó numerosos premios alrededor del mundo, sin importar el ligero cambio de sonido. Hasta el momento ha vendido más de 8 millones de copias.

Su tercer disco, titulado The Best Damn Thing, salió a la venta el 17 de abril de 2007 y ha vendido más de 6 millones de copias en el mundo.De éste se han extraído los singles Girlfriend, When You're Gone, Hot y the best damn thing. En este disco Avril ha contado con las colaboraciones de Butch Walker, Deryck Whibley, Travis Barker, (baterista de +44, ex Blink-182) y Rob Cavallo, el disco ha sido producido por Dr. Luke, Deryck Whibley, su marido, y por la misma Avril.

El 18 de febrero del 2007 Avril cantó en las sesiones AOL en directo los sencillos Everything Back But You, I Can Do Better y When You're Gone.

Su nueva gira mundial con el álbum The Best Damn Thing llamada The Best Damn Tour comenzó en Calgary, Canadá, y acabará en breve tras sus últimos conciertos en Asia. Una carta que envió a sus fans confirma que no habrán mas fechas, por lo que no irá a Latinoamerica ni volverá a España (donde se canceló su único concierto, según se dice, por la huelga de camioneros del país).

En ésta gira por primera vez estuvo indispuesta por padecer laringitis aguda. En septiembre de 2008 salio a la venta el DVD "The Best Damn Tour, Live in Toronto" con el concierto allí grabado y extras no confirmados.
